Although others have come up to (and possibly exceeded) their standards, the Inn at Little Washington is still a gem in the country and a great home base for exploration of Washington and Sperryville.

Sperryville, Virginia

Past the western reaches of the Washington DC suburbs but still east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sperryville sits waiting to be found. My fondest memories were of a diner called the Pig Out or Pig Heaven or something like that and a B&B where I was kept up all night by crickets, in the room. The innkeeper's solution? A can of bug spray. I hear she also had a friend of mine (who had previously stayed there) help her move furniture. That was back in the 90's. Sperryville has come quite a bit farther. At least there's stuff to do. And it is very pretty. (This photo is of Old Rag Photography, from their website. - what a charming building).
